CLIENT: N/A | DATE: November, 2017 For our first choreographed lumia installation, we couldn't think of a better song than "Theme From a Summer Place" to accompany this dance of light. The process to create this involved even more steps than you might imagine including custom hand-crafted light visuals, then warping those to a fraction of the speed, then we projected that against our patented (not really) surface to document the movement of the light. Now sit back, unwind and enjoy. Below is the first render of the experimental light film that we paired with "Theme From a Summer Place" it is the basis of the lumia creation above. It is the first step to translating the movement and color of the orbs to lumia. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: October, 2017 Venturing into more of an art film realm with this project, "Avitae Venae" (meaning 'Ancient Veins') explores liquid interactions up close and personal. Set to Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," the stark, noir nature of the film gives an eerie and menacing take on the 60's liquid light shows. CLIENT: Moonshie Sax | DATE: October, 2017 Step 1: Take an episode of The Outer Limits starring none other than William Shatner Step 2: Put it through the ringer in VDMX with glitch and feedback effects Step 3: Combine it with some new saucy tunes by Moonshie Sax Matthew Palmquist of Moonshie Sax has been a huge help to Second Sight Visuals since day one. He is part of The Ancient Moon with whom we played our first festival with. It was our pleasure to cook him up some smooth, trippy visuals to match his song, "Second Coming." CLIENT: Homeboi | DATE: October, 2017 One of our most collaborative projects to date, we teamed up with Ryan Bouchie and Mikail of Homeboi to create the vision for a visual interpretation of their song, "A Long Drive Home." The first single off of their latest debut album "See You Soon" has a unique sound unlike anything you've heard before. The video had to be unique then as well. We spent time going over Ryan's initial vision and sculpting the story and the characters to create a mysterious and unpredictable universe for it to live in. Over the course of a few different shooting days (and nights) we had the raw footage for Ryan to start surgery on. Through a number of iterations, we finally landed on the version you see below. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: October, 2017 Sculpture will never be the same. Through a new project from Second Sight Visuals, projection mapping, light art, interactive technologies and physical sculpture combine in a modular piece we call Constellation. Starting off with Ursa Major's iconic Big Dipper, we tested a proof of concept where light played and danced off of a reflective sculpture that bares the shape of said constellation. The interactivity comes through all sorts of controllers such as tapping out beats and playing it like a drum, using buttons in chords like an organ, or having a Wii remote work like a flashlight and explore the piece that way. Additionally testing is in the works for audio reactivity and using this sculpture in a live music setting. The opportunities for unique interactions with the sculpture are truly limitless and we are excited to dive in further. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: October, 2017 New shots from new discoveries involving my pure silver film. These photos were created by making unique visuals and then shooting them through a cylinder of the film or using the film as a mirror to get a new perspective on the blended colors.
CLIENT: Secret Circus | DATE: September, 2017 Back for our second year at Secret Circus, we had the awesome opportunity to outfit the Cabana/DJ stage. We tried something new by using thin, white scrims to create a front layer of projection and a "holographic" effect. It went over really well and was enjoyed by both the artists and fans. Here's a look at how it went down. CLIENT: Shrimpnose | DATE: November, 2017 What do you get when you cross handmade visuals with extreme slow motion? Well basically what you are about to watch below. Using the track "worry" from Minneapolis producer Shrimpnose, we set a selection of lava looking light into motion to vibe with the spirit of the song. Colors dance and shift with the slightest of movement creating a unique visual. This was then turned into a lumia version before with the high contrast and deep blacks helping create negative space. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: September, 2017 I took my lumia experiments on the road and with the help of my trusty deep cycle marine battery I lit up the darkest parts of Minneapolis.
Alleyways, abandoned buildings and parked tractor trailers were all free game. CLIENT: all so frightened | DATE: September, 2017 Dichroic film clashes with macro videography in this stunning visual accompaniment to the song, "I Don't Follow." Through a mix of lumia and surreal lightscapes, colors and shapes form and fold to dazzle your eyes. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: September, 2017 It's a small world after all in macro photography. I've recently been experimenting with an extension tube for my camera to get up close and personal but at a higher resolution than my current microscopes.
These photos are presented without editing from reflections and refractions in my dichroic films and more. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: September, 2017 In a moment of inspiration, I grabbed my dichroic sheets and began to experiment with them and the camera. First I shot through them as I had before, but then I went a different direction.
Playing with rolling them up to have the light reflect infinitely off of them, I also zoomed in close and used the manual focus to find bokeh formations that show themselves as lumia forms. Below are the results of these trials. I appreciate your feedback. If you like them enough, check out what you can get them printed on in the Second Sight Visuals Society 6 Shop. CLIENT: Vital Vibrations | DATE: August, 2017 With our biggest undertaking at the time, we were tasked with providing technical and visual support for the main stage at the Vital Vibrations 2017. For this stage (same as Earth Rhythms) we rented a 10k Christie projector. Using scaffolding we brought the projector 11.5' above the crowd and mapped the Mission-inspired stage facade. We provided visual support for two nights including Phutureprimative's set and many others. CLIENT: Better World Museum | DATE: August, 2017 50 year old photos are brought back to life through the use of AR. Like a cryogenic piece of film, new tech has been invented in order to give these moments a second chance at it. CLIENT: Dance Agenda | DATE: August, 2017 Played a trance event at the Uptown VFW that featured international artist, Ben Nicky. For this show I used multiple effects layers and groups to build up over time to save the best for last. With the four on the floor style and tempo of trance and psytrance I experimented with more audio-reactive effects and BPM matching. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: August, 2017 Combining the beautiful gradients that only dichroic film can provide, me and my partner in crime, Karrie Cooling, roamed the Arizona desert for a one-of-a-kind photo shoot. Using dichoric films and the sun to create a lumia-style light art, alien colors are projected onto pieces of desert life to breathe new energy the native residents of this lifeless place. UPDATE: We are now on Society6, get all of these images below on your favorite stuff. They make the perfect gift for the cacti lover in your life, especially if that person is YOU! CLIENT: HOMEBOI | DATE: August, 2017 Deeply ingrained and inspired by the liquid early light shows of the 60's we put a Second Sight Visuals twist on it and looked at liquid interactions on a microscopic level. With dancing colors, bubbles and fluid dynamics all playing a leading role, this five minute experimental film explores a smaller world. Music by Ryan Bouchie of Homeboi. Enjoy. CLIENT: N/A | DATE August, 2017 Early experiments with the AR app, Aurasama (Now HP Reveal), that turned my business card into much more. I placed my reel on top of the card so that there's work to go with the name. Still works on our old cards and now has our live events and aesthetics reels on both side of the new card. Check it out! CLIENT: Midtown Greenway Coalition | DATE: July, 2017 For the 2017 Minneapolis Greenway Glow, Second Sight Visuals won installation rights to two spots along the cross-city bike path. The first was a remix of our Apello project. Instead of utilizing feedback, we made a random line generator where the shape could be controlled by the participant. Often children using the program would get to places that we didn't even know were possible. It was exciting to see them learn to control the outcome. Secondly was a lumia installation that ran a slowed down version of Emergence to cast a colorful lighting array underneath the bridge. Along with this were the cubes from What Do You See MN? These had been outfitted with sound reactive LEDs so the voices and music of the night were translated into color. APELLO Lumia
CLIENT: N/A | DATE: July, 2017 In the small town of Cassville, Wisconsin lives a place lost in time. Stonefield. Here, artifacts from the past continue living as if on pause from the dimension from which the originated. I wanted to take some of the black and white photos from my adventure there and give them a Chris Van Allsburg twist in the theme of his book "The Mysteries of Harris Burdick." Here the style follows as such: A title and a few words that accompany the image. You want to start to tell a tale and let the viewer complete it in their minds. I encourage you reading this to try some yourself in the comments below or with me as I release these on Instagram. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: July, 2017 What happens to light when you try and control it's path? What about when you feed it into itself in a timeless, shapeless void? These were questions that needed to be answered. The pictures below serve as evidence of these trials. Enjoy at your own discretion. CLIENT: Earth Rhythms | DATE: June, 2017 Projection mapped a mission-style facade on the Grove stage at Earth Rhythms. Used a mixture of the Emergence technique and other clips for a number of artists. Check the recap video below with music by Beak Nasty and TRNSTYL.

Apello in a nutshell is an interactive rainbow machine. Point it at anything you wish had rainbows.
Using VDMX we build out several iterations to work in unique situations. The white light is controlled and mapped in the program and then shot through a prism to give it the angelic, dancing spectrum you see. The first application was for a party at a hotel. Seeing their cool, but bland, sculpture on the stairs as you walk in inspired me to hijack it and augment it with light and rainbows. Apello was also featured with an interactive element at a local artist meetup. Here you could control it's movement and growth via a wii controller. The content itself utilized the audio of the space to build a spectragram in real time as well. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: May, 2017 What is a land constellation you ask? Well, they are all around us. Just Google something, anything, and they come alive. The secret is putting them all together. Each of these constellations was formed using the geographic locations of Googled keywords. It's like a star map right beneath your nose. Know how to automate this process and want to work together to build it into a site? Let me know. ART BICYCLE ICE CREAM T-SHIRT |
