Using AI outpainting, I've reimagined and planted false memories in the viewer. Originally derived from single slides of 1950s and 60s home movies, the rest is just that, something completely invented.

CLIENT: N/A | DATE: November, 2018 A peek at the early days of light discovery and images of celestial events (also explored in "PULSAR"). I imagine these images depicting light as it travels through the historical and now hypothetical "aether". This exploration has opened our imagination into what is further possible in the field of lumia (light art). Through reflections, films and different light sources, there are many more discoveries on the horizon. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: November, 2018 Dedrochronology is not only a mouthful, but it's the science of aging trees based on their rings. We examined this science through colorful lumia patterns reflected onto the canvas that was a beautiful tree stump. Results below. Two bonus shots of desert rock piles bathed in dichroic light.
CLIENT: Trent Kim | DATE: June, 2018 Following a successful 2017 presentation, I was primed and ready to come back with even more groundbreaking lumia projects. This presentation picked up from where I left off and was titled "Technologically Mediated Lumia Continued." Using many of the same techniques and equipment, I focused even further on interactive qualities that bring light art techniques into the modern age. CLIENT: Art Works Eagan | Date: April, 2018 The first venture into phone app creation was this experiment known as Kinetic Colors. Using data from your cell phone's accelerometer and gyroscope, the app changes colors to reflect speed and position. As you move the phone around in space, you are able to draw with light and color with the help of long exposure photography. Check out a few of the cool results and download the app for Android below. Some photos taken with the help of Andrew Skalak and Matt McNeil.
CLIENT: ARTWORKS EAGAN | DATE: April, 2018 It was the feeling of Christmas morning all over again when I received a slender package in the mail marked "TO: Second Sight Visuals." I quickly and carefully opened the package. I pulled out the first of four paper-thin sheets as their colors danced in the light. It was my 3M dichroic film samples and they were gorgeous as they shimmered from pink to yellow and all of the colors in between. Below is the first set of photos that I took with it around Minneapolis. I played with the film to try and create new gradients of color. Grab a free sample of your own over at 3M's website, you won't be disappointed! These have been printed on a range of canvas sizes. Reach out if you'd like to purchase. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: March, 2018 In a continual exploration of light and its properties, I've built out these lightscapes (also available as metal prints). Standing around 15'x10' these static, projected forms look at color and shape to create an immersive experience. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: March, 2017 Two layers of projection merge and blend playing host to positive and negative spaces. The first is a front projected sphere whose contents shift through a feedback-styled dance. The second is a reflected lumia projection harnessing colors that push through the white noise. This style was harnessed live during the Art-Tech Experience. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: February, 2018 These snake-like forms feel as though they are almost moving right out of the image. The prism/spectrum coloration along with the scaly moire pattern helps the illusion as well. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: February, 2018 Five dichroic prisms lineup to shine bright. The first round of experiments involving light and shadow along with different angles to increase saturation and change the color output. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: February, 2018 A new series that explores bending light in new and unexpected ways. Colorful compositions were created and then projected out into the darkness. These fragments of light were then reassembled in camera. Little to no post was done on these even though they look like a sci-fi space scene. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: December, 2017 Welcome, you are now entering a bizarre place between dimensions. Here, geographic planes both exist and don't exist simultaneously. Topographical renders have appeared to us but only in abstract photography. Dive into the ooze. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: December, 2017 In further attempts to find ways in which light acts like a liquid, we find ourselves discovering new ways to see. Fusilis, from the Latin "molten, soften, liquid", was the best word to describe this new series. Multiple lights of changing color come into and out of focus as they dance across the lens. We've created a photo series and also explored this phenomenon in video form as well. Slowing it down to analyze the behavior at a higher frame rate. Here we get 60s light show vibes and unique lumia patterns. See them in motion here. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: November, 2017 Energy. Light. Frequency. Color. All are examined in -=L U C I D=-. In a series of long exposure photographs, the colors of the spectrum and chakra are performed and created over time. Each bearing its own unique outcome and properties. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: October, 2017 New shots from new discoveries involving my pure silver film. These photos were created by making unique visuals and then shooting them through a cylinder of the film or using the film as a mirror to get a new perspective on the blended colors.
CLIENT: N/A | DATE: September, 2017 It's a small world after all in macro photography. I've recently been experimenting with an extension tube for my camera to get up close and personal but at a higher resolution than my current microscopes.
These photos are presented without editing from reflections and refractions in my dichroic films and more. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: September, 2017 In a moment of inspiration, I grabbed my dichroic sheets and began to experiment with them and the camera. First I shot through them as I had before, but then I went a different direction.
Playing with rolling them up to have the light reflect infinitely off of them, I also zoomed in close and used the manual focus to find bokeh formations that show themselves as lumia forms. Below are the results of these trials. I appreciate your feedback. If you like them enough, check out what you can get them printed on in the Second Sight Visuals Society 6 Shop. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: August, 2017 Combining the beautiful gradients that only dichroic film can provide, me and my partner in crime, Karrie Cooling, roamed the Arizona desert for a one-of-a-kind photo shoot. Using dichoric films and the sun to create a lumia-style light art, alien colors are projected onto pieces of desert life to breathe new energy the native residents of this lifeless place. UPDATE: We are now on Society6, get all of these images below on your favorite stuff. They make the perfect gift for the cacti lover in your life, especially if that person is YOU! CLIENT: N/A | DATE: July, 2017 In the small town of Cassville, Wisconsin lives a place lost in time. Stonefield. Here, artifacts from the past continue living as if on pause from the dimension from which the originated. I wanted to take some of the black and white photos from my adventure there and give them a Chris Van Allsburg twist in the theme of his book "The Mysteries of Harris Burdick." Here the style follows as such: A title and a few words that accompany the image. You want to start to tell a tale and let the viewer complete it in their minds. I encourage you reading this to try some yourself in the comments below or with me as I release these on Instagram. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: July, 2017 What happens to light when you try and control it's path? What about when you feed it into itself in a timeless, shapeless void? These were questions that needed to be answered. The pictures below serve as evidence of these trials. Enjoy at your own discretion. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: May, 2017 Blended Light lives at the intersection of projection and long exposure photography. Here I used the projection mapping program, HeavyM, to create unique geometries that contain changing colors and video content. One I selected the movement of each piece, I used my Canon T3i to play with the exposure length while manipulating it to blur and mix the shapes. The outcome is a spacey, mixed palette of pixels. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: March, 2017 This past March I embarked on an epic road trip across Arizona. With the rental RV all gassed up and the wind in my hair I set off on a 1000 mile trip around the great state. Through forests, mountains, valleys, deserts, cactus, and, at one point, getting stuck on the further road from humanity where no one can hear you scream... It was an incredible time. What really caught my eye and need for exploration, however, where the incredible amount of abandoned places I found along the way. Old rest stops, a dog racing track, some type of Native American trading post... Here are some pictures taken from these places abandoned by time. To find more abandoned places, please visit Ghost Towns AZ. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: January, 2017 The kaleidowarped series gives new life to old photos. In playing with gradients, filter options and reflections, these shots become bizarre new worlds. Pictures taken from all over the place, New York, Colorado, Minnesota State Fair, and more. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: December, 2016 Merry Xmas to me! Santa brought your boy a brand new fog machine. He probably had no idea what i wanted to do with it. The first experiment was to project on to it (of course). I wanted to use custom projected visuals to create colorful clouds that stand still in time. Mission accomplished? The best results came from projecting visuals with high saturation and color to allow the camera to really pick up the full range. Also, VDMX Rutt Etra effect with scan lines helped to create a laser-like effect with multiple layers within the smoke. CLIENT: N/A | DATE: July, 2016 Following up to some of my most successful IG posts, I wanted to dive deeper into the Optical Centrifuge series. As the name implies, the Optical Centrifuge is a spinning vortex of colors that seem to be pushed to their limits as they spill out in all directions. I like how they become their own galaxies with colors and rotations unique to each photo. I will let you in on a little secret, these are just a combination of my phone, a slick surface, and a long exposure. Each picture is titled with the Google-searched image that I feel like looking up (super scientific I know...) The phone's brightness is turned all the way up as I find a dark place to experiment. Give it a good spin, take a few shots and see what you get! Feel free to tag me @insidebriansbrain or #OpticalCentrifuge if you make some. The top few are new pics taken with my Canon T3i with variable exposure times and the bottom batch are some that I put out on Instagram a while back that were taken with my old GoPro HERO 2. |
