DEEP TIME - AN AI, 360, A/V EXPERIENCE

10/15/2022

"DEEP TIME" is a journey through change on a geologic scale. With the assistance of AI, 360 imagery of ancient, mysterious, and even alien landscapes morph and change over the course of 5 short minutes while showing millions, if not billions, of years of evolution. What was the world like before man? Spend some solitude visiting this new world while you take in the custom soundtrack from North Innsbruck.

CORRUPTED DREAMS

Using AI outpainting, I've reimagined and planted false memories in the viewer. Originally derived from single slides of 1950s and 60s home movies, the rest is just that, something completely invented.

CLIENT: Minneapolis Institute of Art | Date: August, 2019
This installation allows participants to melt into a rainbow of colors in real time. Using Resolume and a kinect camera, internal feedback was adjusted to give a colorful, pixel sorting look. These images and footage were taken at the Minneapolis Institute of Art where it was set up for their summer "Design Night."

Playing with drone footage has become a new interest of mine (see DREAMWORLD). The smooth motion and ability to do what most cameras cannot opens up a lot of doors.
Here I utilized some footage from Art-Tech alum, Jason Kaasovic as he flew through the Minnesota Science Museum. The main manipulation came in VDMX via internal feedback and mirroring. The rest is just happy accidents!

Starting to experiment more with 360 and the possibilities of glitching it out. Below is a quick example of how a relatively boring commute can turn into something a bit more magical.

AESTUS - An Exploration in Light

AESTUS takes a look at iridescence in its natural form. I stumbled upon some excellent sunlight hitting an antique plate that I had recently purchased and got right to work. Shooting in multiple speeds and ISO levels with my Samsung S7, I was able to get some excellent results. Shout out to the lazy Susan that helped the rotation.

CLIENT: Drone Not Drones  |  DATE: January, 2019
In our third year preforming for Drone Not Drones, we provided unique visual experiences for a number of artists as seen below. Looking to pull from installations like Human Rorschach, Zenith and Emergence, visuals were produced on the fly with the help of live cameras, kinect and more.

A peek at the early days of light discovery and images of celestial events (also explored in "PULSAR"). I imagine these images depicting light as it travels through the historical and now hypothetical "aether".

This exploration has opened our imagination into what is further possible in the field of lumia (light art). Through reflections, films and different light sources, there are many more discoveries on the horizon.

We wanted to explore the core value of light, so in SANCTUS white light was contorted and pushed through a prism creating a ballet of rainbows. We then set this beautiful dance to an improvised set by the Infinite Strangers.

Enjoy.

Dispersion looks at how light interacts through multiple prisms. This hands-on experiment discovered new combinations of colors beyond human imagination. We set the video to an equally experimental track by Brains & Hutch. Enjoy.

Dedrochronology is not only a mouthful, but it's the science of aging trees based on their rings. We examined this science through colorful lumia patterns reflected onto the canvas that was a beautiful tree stump. Results below.

An experiment in immersive light. Down the Rabbit Hole has you staring right into the light at the end of the tunnel. Photons of all colors brush right past your face as you're glued to your seat. An inviting but challenging track from Infinite Strangers challenges your perceptions, time moves slower.

In an ongoing series of events held at Honey by rapper, Will Robinson, I showcased Metamorphosis, a live edited feed where people dancing could interact with an alien, glitchy version of themselves.

In the first version we utilized VDMX and a 1080 webcam. In the 2018 version, we utilized the xbox kinect, Touchdesigner and Resolume in order to create a live, light painting installation.

CLIENT: Secret Circus  |  DATE: September, 2018
With our third year at Secret Circus, we decided to pull out all the stops. We had full reign to build out the stage design we wanted and create the perfect visual aesthetic for this stage and style of music.

Here's the details:
Projection - BenQ Short Throw from the truss to the back wall. Three screens divided and mapped.
Monitors - 8, 17" monitors mirrored and hung on the front of the stage.
Lighting - 4 DMX scanners, 4 LED strips, 2 LED cubes for accent lighting and color schemes
Interactive - Kinect for Windows running into Touchdesigner giving both the DJ a unique look and the opportunity for the audience to interact and make their own visuals. It was a hit.

The power combo of Second Sight Visuals and Ryan Bouchie are at it again. This time bringing some chill with a macroscopic liquids video. Diving through different layers into the unknown, bubbles form and colors collide in a sea of uncertainty.

Enjoy.

SUPERLUMINAL: communication and travel are the conjectural propagation of information or matter faster than the speed of light.

Utilizing the smooth jams of Ross Auger again, this video creates pattern and thought from a hyper look at light, reflection and color.

FIBONACCI  FLORA

CLIENT: Northern Spark  |  DATE: June, 2018
I was asked to contribute video remixes for the 2018 Northern Spark festival by Paige Dansinger of the Better World Museum. The source videos were of people drawing local edible plants in virtual reality. I created a three layered mandala out of these clips and utilized numbers from the Fibonacci sequence to inform the kaleidoscopic effects. This, in turn, created new and novel virtual flowers with similar shapes and growth patterns that can be found in nature.

This was part of a group projection for two nights on the ceiling of the Minneapolis Central Library.

Feedback, normally a chaotic and uncontrollable force. Yet here, with "valence" we find a calm and directed look into the unknown. Featuring more slick beats by all so frightened, let this tune and visual drift you away.

Set to a "Boards of Canada" track played both forwards and backwards simultaneously, this symphony of color dances in a Non-Newtonian bath.

Shot on a macro scale, the movements and interaction of different fluids create a spacey and relaxing visual complement to the disorienting audio.

Here you can see both the final video mapped onto my '94 Kawasaki Ninja 500, and below the complete video.
