Lumia Instruments

Lumia and light art in many different styles and techniques has been at the core of much of our work. Getting inspiration of the approaches used by Thomas Wilfred and modern lumia artists, I took it a step forward and worked to create ways to interact directly with the light. Take a peek at a few of our inventions.

LUMIA FORCEUnleash your inner jedi by controlling light with only your hands. In this instrument, the kinect picks up the position of your hands to control both the location of the lumia and the feedback level (in this case causing a change in color).
See how it was used live in the A/V show during the Art-Tech Experience. |

LUMIA HARPWith inspiration from the classic theremin, I utilized the Xbox Kinect, TouchDesigner and Resolume to create a playable light instrument that creates an output as you break an invisible plane.
Here the shape and position of your hand through the plane masks an image and allows you to play the colors of that image. |
SENTIRESynesthesia is often described as the crossing of senses. Colors become sounds, shapes and numbers become feelings and so on.
For Sentire (Latin for "to feel"), I wanted to explore the sonochromatic scale (colors for different tonal frequencies) in a way that users could both play colors and physically feel them through their bodies. Utilizing an old school "Aura Interactor" wearable sub woofer, I connected tones to their corresponding color and connected those both to a midi controller. As you press one of the eight buttons, you will both see a colorful lumia output and also feel that low hertz tone. It starts to get really interesting as you mix notes to both form chords and also to create dissonance. |
